5 Things You Must Do at the Kangaroo Island Racing Carnival

By Heidi Schwartzkopff

Kangaroo Island’s most popular event, the SeaLink Kangaroo Island Racing Carnival is back again for 2022! From February 17 to 19, make the trip to Kangaroo Island to the Cygnet River for a few days of racing fun, food and wine, and of course dress up in your best racing attire. Take a look at my top tips for must-see and do activities when you head over for the Kangaroo Island Cup and races.

1. Back a Winner

Whether you’re a regular racing enthusiast or just doing it for the novelty, picking a horse to back is guaranteed fun and will create a stronger involvement in the day by including yourself in the races and competition. If you’re not a regular punter, perhaps go in with a group of friends and put a few dollars on a few horses. Choose a horse with a funny name, perhaps one with your lucky number or one that just looks like a winner. However, remember to gamble responsibly!

2. Dress to Impress

Fashion is always exciting at the Races, it’s a great social affair for ladies to frock up with a hat or fascinator and gentlemen to suit up. You’ll look the part, so why not enter Fashions on the Field! Taking place on Saturday February 19 at the main race day - The Kangaroo Island Cup, Fashions on the Field shows off all the trackside style. Whether your outfit has been planned for months, or whipped together at the last minute, everyone is welcome and there are many great prizes to be won. The Best Dressed winner will then continue on to qualify for the state final.

3. Enjoy a Long Lunch

Join the stylish track-side marquee ‘Kangaroo Island Long Lunch’ on Saturday February 19. You’ll devour a delicious 4-course meal provided and wash it down with divine local wines from Dudley Wines along with a selection of beers. This Long Lunch is one you’ll be thinking about days later.

Private Party Tents are another option for the day. Book your own track-side tent with top views of the horse racing action, get a group of friends together, bring your own fine food or order from the caterer, and your day is sorted.

4. Taste Kangaroo Island

With sensational produce on Kangaroo Island, it’s practically a crime to visit and not try one of everything. Local food and wine will be available track-side, however, while you’re here, stay on for the weekend and work your way through some of the great produce on the island.

Sample the award winning KI Spirits’ Gin, Ligurian bee honey, micro-brewery beers and ciders, succulent seafood and Kangaroo Island wine from the unique cellar doors dotted around the island. There are many cafes and restaurants with simply unparalleled menus embracing the local fare. You won’t go home hungry. Find where to eat and drink with the digital KI map.

5. Hit Up the Punters Intermission

With so much to see on Kangaroo Island, you’ll need to allow time to explore the beautiful landscapes and scenery. The Dudley Wines Punters Intermission will be held Friday and Sunday and is a great place to sit back and enjoy the extraordinary views Kangaroo Island is so famous for.

Relax with a glass of Dudley bubbly at their amazing Cliff-top Cellar Door, enjoy live music, feast on fabulous local fare and join in on the KI Cup Carnival weekend celebrations.

TIP: If you’re staying for the weekend, make sure you book accommodation and ferry travel in advance. It’s a busy weekend on the island so get yourself sorted before you head over and it will be all smooth sailing. See the SeaLink website for accommodation, ferry fares and all your travel arrangements.
