The Best Beaches on Kangaroo Island
There is no shortage of beaches along the island's shores, Kangaroo Island leads the way when it comes to incredible sand and surf.
Some of Kangaroo Island’s beaches are a playground for marine wildlife and others are so expansive you won’t need to fight for towel space. Here's an at-a-glance, but by no means comprehensive look at the best beaches on Kangaroo Island to spend the day at.
Hanson Bay is the holy place for surf on the island and renowned for its epic swells. With strong rips and undertows along with its exposure to large swells, makes surfing at Hanson Bay quite strenuous. However, it is dangerous to swim here; for safer swimming conditions, head to the nearby surf beach Vivonne Bay.
Vivonne Bay was proclaimed the best beach in the world in 2003. The bay doesn't fall short of its 2003 title, come check it out. Vivonne Bay is perfect for swimming, all levels of surfers and has a picturesque jetty ideal for fishing.
Stokes Bay is a favourite, if not the perfect beach for everyone in the family. This secluded beach is situated on the northern coast of Kangaroo Island facing the mainland. Stokes bay has a unique natural pool that is protected from the pounding surf, perfect for younger children or those that want to laze around in the water.
Emu Bay is one of Kangaroo Island’s beaches you are allowed to drive your car onto, however, you will need a 4wd to do so. Emu bay is a postcard beach with beautiful white sands that meet the florescent light blue ocean KI has to offer. Take our word for it and come and see for yourself.
Pennington Bay sits on the south coast of the island en-route to the Dudley Peninsula. This stunning bay is famous for its surfing. In fact, it offers some of the best surfing on the island for advanced surfers. Although, the water at Pennington Bay is not always ideal for swimming, the stunning scenery is a great place to take some magnificent photographs. Dolphins and whales can often be spotted swimming and playing in the Southern Ocean. Next stop is Antarctica!
