Tasting Kangaroo Island
Kangaroo Island has quickly developed a reputation for its vast selection of gourmet food and beverages.
The Island produces food as it was meant to taste, discover what it has to offer from its food producers to the blossoming spirit region for yourself. After a long day wandering among sea lions, visiting Flinders Chase National Park and surfing down sand dunes, it’s time to feast on some of the Islands most gourmet products.
Something Kangaroo Island is famous for is it highly awarded honey. However, not many realise that the Islands remoteness from the mainland plays a part in why the honey is so great. Kangaroo Island’s Ligurian bee has never come in contact with another strain of bee. As the distance between the Island and the mainland to far for a bee to travel meaning Kangaroo Island have the purest bee in the world. With pure honey comes amazing ice-cream. The Clifford’s Honey Farm produces a honey ice-cream that is one of Kangaroo Islands secret gems and a must have on the island; if you don’t make it to the farm it is available in SeaLink ferry terminal.
Kangaroo Island is home to some of the best seafood money can buy. The crystal clear and clean water plays a factor making it a perfect environment for seafood. The Island’s prized Marron is the star attraction at Vivienne Bay’s Andermel Café. To experience the full gourmet package try the “Poacher’s Platter”, we recommend it. Visitors can also get a glimpse of live marrons up and close at the Andermel Marron Farms holding tank, just don’t get to close. But if claws aren’t your thing, get around The Oyster Farm Shop at American River. Grab a dozen oysters and a bottle of Kangaroo Island red and have a relaxing picking with a loved one, why not?
Kangaroo Island may have endless amounts of gourmet foods but finish the day off with a good old gin and tonic. And why not use the gin that took out the Champion Gin Trophy at the Australian Distilled Spirits Awards? The small distillery Kangaroo Island Spirits have made a big impact on the gin world with their Old Tom Gin. Definitely don’t take my word for it; it would be rude not to visit.
